PART 1 of 3 ////////////// Sleeping under the stars is a bit overrated for me. Seems the bugs attack, the critters find you, the wind blows away your body heat, frost and condensation soak your bag, then the rain falls, and no matter what your gear gets filthy. A minimalist tent tarp, bivy, or floor-less tent are some ways to avoid to some of those hassles. But my favorite option is a quality designed and constructed lightweight backpacking tent like the ones profiled in this Nutnfancy series of videos. Here I cover most of the design aspects and experience-based opinions on just such a tent. POUs, Firepower vs Mobility, Impact, Livability concerns, Longevity, Ventialtion, Maintenance, Sleeve and Pole Construction, Fabric Choices, Convenience Features, and buying sources are all covered in the series. It would be unrealistic and probably of limited use for me to review certain models since most are so shortlived in the marketplace. Instead I use category representatives and teach the features, construction, sizing, and the many considerations to arm the buyer with the knowledge to make the best purchase choice. Always buy out-of-season whenever possible to save big money; it's very possible to get a ultra-quality BP tent this way for well under $200. Take care of it and it will serve you and your family forever too. Location was the scenic and beautiful Rocky Mountains with Allie the Mountain Dog in tow. This series was lots of work to put together, make happen, and ...

Wow I have to give it to you, I never watched a 32 minute how-to, review or anything similar, not even a third of that, and stayed interested. This time I did. 32 minutes. So many details, and personally the takehome message for me: don’t buy your tent too small. I have to add, I kindof think many people want to go ultralight, simply because they are worried of not being able to carry the weight, maybe due to an injury, maybe something else. Anyways, thx for this excellent explanation.

bangmeister June 1, 2010 at 4:55 pm

how did you get a 32 minute video on here? are you friends with someone in youtube?

mummbly1231 June 1, 2010 at 5:19 pm

awsome video

biggin2155 June 1, 2010 at 6:13 pm

He already spend a ridiculous amount of time editing ONE video… do you really think he has enough time to make two of each video? Thats nuts. Just wait for it to load then fast forward

PGTRegard June 1, 2010 at 6:22 pm

Nutnfancy takes his time to make these videos so I figure that he can edit them however the hell he wants to. Just enjoy them or read the side bar explanation thats what they’re there for.

I wish you would experiment with the issue of short-n-sweet versus lengthy intros etc. Try posting an “A” and a “B” version of a couple of your next efforts, one without the fluff. See by the comments or ratings, which is preferred.

@atnipjoe watch?v=Jnoo4BPe2eo Minus 26 degrees (not sure if it is Celsius or Fahrenheit) night-time temperature and these guys are using hammock tents. They use: an undercover, multi-mat (closed cell foam), down sleeping bag, open cell foam, space blanket then hammock. I think if properly prepared it would be fine for winter camping.

atnipjoe June 1, 2010 at 8:11 pm

@Aryaba hammock tent is ok in the summer but in winter the cold air would go up under neath you and freeze you to death even on a cool night

charliewecker June 1, 2010 at 9:09 pm

Haha “Miyagi would have been proud” You’re awesome, and I love your dog!

@chefkrisb;
How ’bout this, instead of creator of this video shortening his videos, how about you hitting the stop button and moving on. If you don’t like his videos, don’t watch them.

OR

How about you make these type of videos, this way you can make it whatever length you want it!

Idiot.

Aryaba June 1, 2010 at 11:20 pm

Have you ever used one of the hammock “tents?” If so, what do you think about them, oh, and how would Allie handle it?

rzrback3 June 1, 2010 at 11:21 pm

I think you provide a useful service and these videos are helpful; however, as others have said, I wish you would cut to the chase sometimes. Found myself dragging the slider bar to jump through your long expositions.

chefkrisb June 1, 2010 at 11:39 pm

I really enjoyed the info.. Thank you very much… BUT YOU TALK WAY TOO MUCH.. I could even hear your stupid dog unzip a tent crawl in and start snoring.. Next time make the video 1/3 the length and shut the F$@k up… Thanks again, I’ve now made my tent choice!

M1American June 2, 2010 at 12:33 am

LOL how Nutn refers to Ally as his “girlfriend” too cute.. he dose love that dog, takes great care for her, that is one happy dog! Great Job Nutn!!!

Max11Seven June 2, 2010 at 12:49 am

One of my favorite set of videos by Nutnfancy, thanks for all the hard work

ClooneyProductions June 2, 2010 at 12:51 am

Thank you for everything. You’re so knowledgeable and such a great person. Your videos are not only informative, but also inspirational. I wish there were more people like you out in the world.

chairmcnasty June 2, 2010 at 1:46 am

If you don’t mind me suggesting, I would look into tarp and sleeping bag type thing. If WROL. If you are in a city/city ish area. There are shelters eveywhere, houses buildings etc. and if SHTF or WROL there are still beds in every house, they don’t leave! Tents generally need soft ground to peg tents down. And a fairly open area. Unless that is all around wherever you live. No need for it WROL. But still great to have if you need to get out of dodge. So any tent will do. Thanks, cheers!

817riverparkmusic June 2, 2010 at 2:33 am

what tent would you use if it was a WROL and you need to move and you had to walk on foot?

koky5150 June 2, 2010 at 2:38 am

So wise and knowledgeable. I’d never think of the condensation/down sleeping bag issue. Glad I found this guy’s reviews it’s helping me save a ton by not buy junk gear.
